Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area

Planting in this forest.
The Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, a breathtaking expanse straddling Oregon and Washington, has long been a cornerstone of the Pacific Northwest’s natural and cultural heritage. With its dramatic canyon walls, lush forests, and winding rivers, the Gorge offers a rich tapestry of ecosystems that support an incredible diversity of plant and animal life. Among recent efforts to restore and enhance this remarkable landscape, the 2021 Sandy River Delta Restoration project stands out as a milestone in ecological renewal.
The Sandy River Delta, located where the Columbia and Sandy Rivers converge, has been a cherished natural area for generations, valued for its scenic beauty, wildlife habitats, and recreational opportunities. However, decades of human development and environmental stress had taken their toll, degrading vital ecosystems. In response, the 2021 restoration project was launched to heal this critical area by planting 20,000 native trees, helping to restore its ecological balance.
The restoration initiative focused on re-establishing native tree species, including black cottonwood and Oregon ash, to stabilize the soil, reduce erosion, and enhance flood resilience. These trees were not chosen at random; they play a vital role in creating habitats for the wildlife that call the delta home. By reintroducing these species, the project sought to restore the ecological integrity of the delta and safeguard the health of the Columbia River system, which provides resources for countless communities and species.
The ecological benefits of this effort extend far beyond the immediate surroundings. The newly planted forest is already providing crucial shelter and food for a variety of wildlife, including bald eagles soaring above the canopy and river otters making their homes along the waterways. In addition, the trees help to shade the Sandy River’s banks, cooling its waters and creating improved conditions for native fish species such as Chinook salmon and steelhead trout—key players in the region’s ecosystem and cultural traditions.
Today, the Sandy River Delta serves not only as an ecological treasure but also as a place for people to connect with nature. Visitors can hike its trails, watch for wildlife, and witness the ongoing transformation sparked by the restoration project. As the young trees take root and grow, they are creating a living legacy for both the ecosystem and the communities that cherish it.
